For a rugby field, 1,000 Delhi University trees face the axe
About 1,000 trees in the Delhi University’s North Campus have been marked -- most of them for felling -- in order to expand the university’s sports complex, so as to host rugby matches there during Commonwealth Games 2010.
These trees are around the university’s sports complex just outside the office of the vice-chancellor, Deepak Pental. The existing ground is not big enough for rugby -- therefore the need to remove the trees from around the ground.
The ground has been earmarked by the Commonwealth Games 2010 Committee for rugby.
Delhi University’s chief engineer GS Gupta did not deny the trees had been marked for felling. But he refused to say how many would actually be felled.
Pental said, “Of course some trees need to be sacrificed for development, but I surely hope it’s not a large number here.”
The organisers of the Games will need the permission of the forest department before the first axe blow falls. A forest department official said, “We have not been approached yet.”
The department may be able to save some of the marked trees, but not all.
Deep fissures have been made in the bark of many trees, which in itself, say some experts, will kill the trees. Govind Singh, a final-year MSc student at the School of Environmental Studies said: “The way the trees have been marked has been so unscientific and callous that even if they are not felled, they will not survive.”
Pental, too, is unhappy with the manner of the marking. “This is absolutely no way of marking trees,” he told HT. “I will probe the matter.”
Environmentalists said it was a perfect example of how unimportant trees were when it came to so-called development. “At our meeting with the CM earlier this month, we had stressed that there was no regard for trees vis-à-vis construction projects. This instance vindicates our stance,” said Ravi Agarwal, director, Toxics Link, and convener of Trees for Delhi, a forum of NGOs protesting the recent felling of trees.
Naturalist Pradip Kishen said: “Trees like the desert eucalyptus and others around the sports complex have existed since the 1930s. It’s quite a loss if they are gone.”

डब्ल्यूटीओ बैठक के विरोध में प्रदर्शन, गिरफ्तारियां दीं
नई दिल्ली, जासं : विश्व व्यापार संगठन (डब्ल्यूटीओ) के विरोध में सोमवार को मौर्या शेरेटन होटल के पास किसानों एवं यूथ फॉर जस्टिस के बैनर तले जुटे लोगों ने प्रदर्शन कर गिरफ्तारियां दीं। ये इस बात को लेकर विरोध जता रहे थे कि डब्ल्यूटीओ की चल रही बैठक में उनके पक्ष को उठाने वाला कोई नहीं है। भारतीय किसान यूनियन के प्रदेश अध्यक्ष युद्धवीर सिंह ने कहा कि होटल में 70 करोड़ किसानों के भाग्य का फैसला करने के लिए आयोजित बैठक में किसानों का कोई भी प्रतिनिधि नहीं था। बैठक में डब्ल्यूटीओ निदेशक, व्यापारी व वाणिज्य मंत्रालय के पदाधिकारियों के साथ मिलकर कुछ व्यापारियों के हस्ताक्षर ले रहे हैं। यह किसानों के विरुद्ध षड्यंत्र की तैयारी है। इस संबंध में कई बार केंद्रीय वाणिज्य मंत्री कमलनाथ को ज्ञापन देने के साथ ही समस्याओं से अवगत कराया जा चुका है। प्रदर्शन का नेतृत्व यूनियन के प्रेस प्रभारी शमशेर राणा ने किया। चाणक्यपुरी थाना पुलिस ने करीब 150 किसानों को गिरफ्तार किया जिन्हें बाद में छोड़ दिया गया। श्री सिंह ने कहा कि 21 मार्च को यूनियन के राष्ट्रीय अध्यक्ष चौधरी महेंद्र सिंह टिकैत जंतर-मंतर पर पंचायत करेंगे जिसमें विभिन्न प्रांतों के किसान भाग लेंगे। इधर, डब्ल्यूटीओ बैठक के दौरान ही यूथ फॉर जस्टिस के बैनर तले प्रदर्शन कर रहे तीन सौ लोगों को भी पुलिस ने हिरासत में लिया। हालांकि शाम में उन्हें भी छोड़ दिया गया। यूथ फॉर जस्टिस के हेमराज ने बताया कि सोमवार को मौर्या शेरेटन में डब्लूटीओ की गुपचुप तरीके से मीटिंग बुलाई गई थी जिसमें किसानों को दी जा रही सब्सिडी कम करने और बाहर से आने वाले अनाजों को ड्यूटी फ्री करने पर चर्चा हो रही थी। इसी के विरोध में कई संगठनों ने मिलकर प्रदर्शन का निर्णय लिया था।[Monday, March 12, 2007 10:59:07 PM (IST) ]

NINE FARMERS COMMIT SUICIDE IN A DAY

Yavatmal (Maharashtra), March 9 (IANS) Noise of official compassion notwithstanding, nine debt-ridden farmers ended their lives in Maharashtra's Vidarbha region on a single day Thursday.
Meanwhile, top officers of the Intelligence Bureau (IB) arrived to ascertain claims and counter-claims on the suicides as 28 farmers took their lives in the first nine days of this month.
Among the nine distressed farmers was 27-year-old Shravan Chicholkar of village Kopa Mandavi of this district, who left behind his 23-year-old widow and a four-month-old child. Vithoba Thakre of Salod and Bandu Rathod of Tandoli are the two other young farmers from this suicide-prone district who ended their lives the same day by consuming poison.
Five other farmers who committed suicide also hailed from western Vidarbha - three from Buldana and one each from Washim and Amravati district. One farmer who killed himself was from the paddy growing Gondia district of eastern Vidarbha, Vidarbha Jan Andolan Samiti chief Kishor Tiwari said.
The nine suicides come on the heels of seven tragedies occurring in the preceding two days. With the 12 farmers who committed suicide in the first six days of March, the month's suicide toll till date stands at 28. The region's toll in the first two months of 2007 is 70 and 88 respectively.
The suicides took place at a time when top IB officers dashed to the state secretariat in Mumbai and then to the distressed region at the behest of the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) for a first hand investigation into the matter.
The officers' visit was occasioned by an affidavit filed in the Supreme Court on behalf of the state government, which stated that funds committed by the central government as a part of the prime minister's relief package were not forthcoming.
Reportedly queried by the PMO about the affidavit, Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh apologised for the statement therein and blamed the bureaucrats for its 'wrong wording'.
